How it works

  • Runs on your device. Text recognition uses Tesseract.js and translation uses the NLLB-200 model, both loaded in your browser. No account, no API key, no server AI.
  • Only works when text changes. Frames are sampled and compared, so holding the camera still reuses the result instead of re-running the model. The same text is translated once.
  • Offline after the first load. The first translation downloads the model (~850 MB) and caches it in your browser. After that it works with no connection at all.
  • Honest language support. Recognises English, Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. Translates into all of those plus Kannada and Malayalam.

Kannada and Malayalam can be translated into, but they cannot be read from the camera: no Tesseract language data exists for those two scripts, so we do not offer them as a source language. Hindi and Marathi share a script, so auto-detection between them is best-effort — pick the source language manually if it is wrong.
